Sis, you got a minute? I know you’ve been through some things — no doubt about it. You’ve had every reason to be angry and frustrated at the world, relationships, your job, your family, politics… all of it. But here’s the truth: staying mad at everything and everyone else isn’t helping you feel better. The most powerful thing you can do is start with the only person you can control — yourself.
I’m not talking about a makeover to impress anybody. I’m talking about showing up for YOU. Hair brushed. Clothes that fit in colors and pattens that complement your slayness. Your favorite scent on. Head held high. When you look in the mirror, you should see a woman who looks and feels undefeated.
Because here’s the thing: your appearance is an energy signal. When you look polished, people treat you differently — and that can open doors. Self-care isn’t vanity; it’s self-respect. This isn’t about chasing society’s beauty standards. It’s about reminding yourself you are worthy of care, worthy of attention, and worthy of feeling confident in your own skin.
When I finally started feeling like myself again after that long battle with empty-nest depression, I made a deal with myself: girl, get out of the house and try new things. So I did. I toured a couple of country clubs, hit up the driving range, even learned how to smoke a cigar or two. But here’s the thing — I quickly noticed my outside didn’t match how I wanted to show up. My hairstyle was outdated, my makeup was heavy, and my clothes made me look frumpy. And guess what? That look was attracting the exact type of outdated people I was trying to move away from.
When I realized I needed to level up how I was showing up, I started paying attention to the little things that make a big difference. One of the first? Lighting.
1. Get Lit
Sis, if you’re getting dressed or putting on makeup in dim, yellow bathroom light, you’re already at a disadvantage. Add a bright cosmetic lamp or overhead LED lighting where you groom and apply makeup. There are economical ways to upgrade to brighter lighting – start by simply changing out the bulbs. The best lighting for grooming is natural daylight, but when that’s not an option, bright white LED lighting is the next best thing. It shows the true colors of your skin, clothes, and makeup — no surprises when you step outside.
Good lighting = good grooming. Trust me, it makes all the difference.
What’s the worst “surprise” you’ve caught in the mirror once you stepped outside? (Lipstick on teeth? Foundation line? Chin whiskers? Unibrow? We’ve all been there!)
2. Mirror, Mirror
Sis, if you don’t have a good magnifying mirror yet, you’re missing out. A high-quality magnifying mirror (tabletop or wall-mounted) is a must-have. They come in every price range and in 2x, 3x, 5x, even 10x magnification — so you can actually see what’s happening before someone else does.
Let’s be honest: those nose hairs (Yes, I said check your nose hairs — I love you enough to tell you.) uneven brows, or pesky peach fuzz aren’t always visible in regular mirrors. But under magnification? You’ll catch the details before the world does. This isn’t about nitpicking — it’s about being intentional. The mirror gives you the power to see yourself clearly and show up polished.
What’s the funniest (or most shocking) thing you’ve ever discovered in a magnifying mirror?
3. Invest in a Full- Length Mirror
Come on now… let’s be real, Sis — you cannot know what you look like from head to toe if you’re only using the bathroom mirror. A full-length mirror is one of the best investments you can make. Why? Because it keeps you accountable.
Before you leave the house, go through the Girlfriend Checklist: (go ahead, print and tape it to your mirror…I don’t mind, I’m here for you.)

The mirror doesn’t lie. And while it might feel uncomfortable at first, it’s better to catch it at home than have your girlfriends whispering about it later.
This isn’t about vanity — it’s about showing up as the woman you know you are inside. When you walk out the door looking polished and confident, your energy shifts. You’ll stand taller, smile more, and attract people who notice the effort you put into yourself.
If your mirror could talk, what would it say about your outfit today?
4. Tend to the Details
Let’s talk grooming basics: hair, nails, feet, brows, facial hair, and teeth. A simple mani/pedi, shaped brows, a smooth face, and a bright smile go a long way in refreshing your look. Teeth bleaching or whitening strips, plus regular cleanings, can make your smile look fresh and youthful. Invest in quality grooming tools made for women. And when in doubt, seek professional help: estheticians specialize in skin — facials, exfoliation, chemical peels, and treatments for all skin types. Cosmetologists cover a wider range: hair, nails, and overall beauty care.
This isn’t about being high maintenance. It’s about being intentional. These little details communicate self-respect and confidence. When you tend to the details, it shows.
If you could only keep one detail polished — nails, brows, hair, or teeth — which one would it be?
5. Refresh Your Wardrobe
Choose clothes that actually fit your figure — not just cover it up. Donate or toss what no longer serves the version of you you’re becoming. Easier said than done, I know. If you’re not sure where to start, ask someone you trust — a friend who dresses well and will be respectfully honest with you.
As we age, our bodies, skin, and hair change. And when we gain weight, the first reaction is often to hide under oversized, loose clothing. Trust me, I get it. I was the FRUMP QUEEN. The more I tried to hide in my clothes, the frumpier I looked.
It was a challenge to change. I didn’t want to see my problem areas — and I certainly didn’t want anyone else to see them. I had become comfortable hiding. But here’s the truth: the frump wasn’t hiding anything; it was just making me invisible. At my sister’s urging, I started reaching for classic, fresh, modern cuts in solid colors — pieces that were flattering and conservative but still made me feel good. To my surprise, people gravitated toward me more. I carried myself differently because I felt better about how I looked.
And here’s one more gem from my sister: stop the madness with the oversized jewelry and wearing too many designer logos in one outfit. (But that’s a blog for another day.)
Be honest, Sis — are you still holding onto your “frump queen” outfit? You know what I’m talking about. The one you wear when you think you’re hiding but secretly hope no one sees you in?
6. Embrace the Gray
When I first started going gray, I went blonde — ash blonde — to hide it. Over time, the bleaching turned my hair platinum, and the longterm use of harsh chemicals to lighten my hair destroyed my beautiful natural curls. To make matters worse, the blonde against my caramel skin washed me out. I thought I was "it"! Slayyyyy. But really, that monochrome look aged me.
It took a real friend — my baby sister — to speak the truth in love. What I discovered is that embracing my gray felt like freedom. I get more compliments now, from both men and women, than I ever did as a monochrome blonde.
Now don’t get me wrong — if blonde is your thing and it makes you feel amazing, then rock on. But if the blonde is killing your look and damaging your hair, hear me when I say this: gray hair does NOT make you look old. What makes you look old is gray hair that’s unkept, brassy, or in a bad cut.
Gray hair done right? That’s mature sexiness. You betta recognize.
And while we’re on the topic of hair, let’s talk wigs for a second… check your wig game. We all wear wigs for different reasons — it’s personal — and I totally get it. But Sis, if your wig looks like it lost a fight with the wind or sits on your head like a helmet, it might be time for a refresh. It’s perfectly okay to wear wigs with a few gray strands intertwined, especially if your brows have transitioned to gray.
Here’s the truth: a wig should enhance your look, not weigh you down. If it feels heavy, hot, or just not flattering, give yourself permission to upgrade. These days there are so many natural-looking, lightweight options that can keep you polished and comfortable.
At the end of the day, your hair — whether it’s natural, gray, dyed, braided, or under a wig — should make you feel confident. Not covered up.
7. Upgrade Your Foundation (Literally)
Sis, let’s talk undergarments. The right foundation can completely change how your clothes fit, how your body looks, and how confident you feel. A well-fitting bra doesn’t just lift “the girls” — it lifts your posture, your silhouette, and your confidence too.
Here’s the truth: there’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to bras. What works for your girlfriend may not work for you. Different brands fit differently, and you often have to test several styles before you find the right support and comfort to hold things together. That’s normal — don’t give up.
If it’s been a while, get measured. Many lingerie boutiques and department stores offer professional fittings, and even online brands now provide tools to help you find your best size. It’s worth the effort — because the right bra can take years off your look and pounds off your silhouette.
And don’t forget: activity matters too. A supportive sports bra is essential when you’re exercising, playing sports, or even dancing. It protects your breast tissue, keeps you comfortable, and lets you focus on moving with confidence instead of constantly adjusting.
Think of undergarments as your personal support system: nobody sees them, but they make all the difference in how you show up.
Be honest, Sis — when’s the last time you got measured for a bra that truly fits?
8. Eat & Speak with Presence
Let’s talk table manners — because how you eat and speak is part of how you show up. Start small: practice putting your fork down between bites. It slows you down, helps with digestion, and makes you look more polished at the table. And please — avoid talking with your mouth full. That one tiny tweak instantly elevates how people experience you.
Take smaller bites instead of overstuffing your mouth. It helps you savor your food, keeps conversations smooth, and makes dining feel more intentional and elegant.
Avoid, if possible, hunching low over the plate with arms on the table. It can make you look tense and withdrawn. Instead, sit up tall, lift your head, and let your body language reflect confidence and ease. A little posture shift can completely change the energy you bring to the table.
And lastly, minimize cell phone use when dining with others. Hey…we’re all grown here. Responding to emails, taking calls without stepping away from the table, watching sports or last night’s episode of your favorite TV series, or playing games on your phone while dining with others is just plain old rude. Come on now….this is real talk. Put your phone away and be in the moment.
Be honest, Sis — what’s your worst table habit you’re ready to break?
9. Practice Posture & Eye Contact
Sis, posture speaks before you ever open your mouth. Stand tall. Shoulders back. Chin lifted. Make eye contact. Nod and smile. You'll be surprised at how many doubletakes I get when make eye contact, nod...and smile.
Confidence is often communicated nonverbally before we ever say a word. Slouching, avoiding eye contact, or shrinking into yourself sends the message that you don’t want to be noticed. But when you carry yourself with intention, you command the room without saying a thing.
Practice this: the next time you walk into a room, pause. Straighten your back, relax your shoulders, and lift your head. Meet people’s eyes with warmth — not a stare-down, just a quiet acknowledgment that you belong there. Because you do.
Confidence isn’t size-specific. It’s posture, presence, and knowing you belong.
What’s the first thing your body language says about you when you walk into a room?
10. Refresh Your Self-Talk While You Refresh Your Look
Sis, how you talk to yourself matters just as much as how you show up on the outside. Pair your grooming routine with affirmations that lift you up: “I am worth this effort.” “I am showing up for me.”
When you brush your hair, remind yourself that you’re nurturing more than just strands — you’re nurturing your spirit. When you choose clothes that fit and flatter, remind yourself that you deserve to feel good in your skin.
Negative self-talk tears us down before we even leave the house. Positive self-talk builds us up so we walk out ready to face the world with confidence.
What’s one affirmation you could say to yourself tomorrow morning as you get ready?
11. Celebrate Small Wins
Sis, don’t wait for a big milestone to acknowledge your progress — celebrate the little moments along the way. Snap a selfie when you feel good in an outfit. Save it as a reminder of how far you’ve come.
Pay attention to how your energy shifts when you walk into a social setting feeling polished and confident. Notice the way people respond to you — and more importantly, how you respond to yourself.
Every small win adds up. Each time you show up with intention, you’re building momentum, strengthening your confidence, and proving to yourself that you can shine again.
What’s one small win you can celebrate this week?
